Opossums Are Unusual Creatures
What About Opossums?
- They are nocturnal marsupials. They move slowly and have distinctive white faces with long, pointy shouts.
- Bigger than mouse and smaller than a house cat, they are easy to pick out.
- Opossums like to play dead. They spray a pungent scent to make their act more believable.
- As marsupials, the females carry their young in a pouch to keep them warm and safe. Kangaroos do the same thing.
How do you know if you have a problem?
- They get into your house, kitchen cabinets, attic, or garage.
- You see them all over your property.
Are Opossums Dangerous?
- Generally, they are peaceful. However, if your dog or cat threatens them, they will defend themselves and their young.
- Hungry Opossums will dig up your lawn looking for grubs.
- They have sharp teeth, and can bite you if you threaten them.
What Should You Do About An Infestation?
- Remove hiding and nesting places, including wood piles, brush piles and similar debris.
- Keep your grass cut short and trim your plants.
- Shut any access opportunities, like sheds, porches, and other points of ingress.
- Keep your garage, garden shed, and other structures closed.
- Patch up your screens so there are no holes.
- Drop mothballs around the property. They will avoid that scent.
- Opossums may be a protected species in your area, so don’t harm them.
