What About Raccoons?
- They are famous for their black fur mask surrounding their eyes.
- Their bodies are 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 feet in length. With tail, they look much bigger.
- Raccoons may be as light as 7 lbs or as heavy as 20+ lbs.
- These are intelligent animals that are active at night (nocturnal).

- The answer is “yes” if you see multiple raccoons on your property on a regular basis.
Are They Dangerous?
- As mammals, they my carry rabies, and as wild animals they have parasites and diseases you might catch.
- Like any wild animal, a raccoon will defend itself with its teeth and claws. This may put your pets and you at risk of attack.
- Raccoon fecal matter contains parasites and other pathogens.
How Should you Handle Raccoons?
- Use metal garbage cans with tops secured by metal straps
- Make sure your garbage cans remain upright.
- Check that your chimney caps are metallic.
- Ensure your garage, attic, shed(s) and other similar spaces are secure..
- Don’t leave pet food and other edibles outside and unprotected. You will attract raccoons with your offer of a free meal.
- Cover your pool and any water features (e.g. fish pond) securely.
- Spread a commercial Raccoon repellent around the property.
